Yes Caffeine is the treatment of choice for apnea of prematurity. Very low birth weight infants (VLBW) were ramdomly assigned to receive caffeine therapy or placebo. Those who received caffeine therapy had lower rates of cerebral palsy and cognitive delay at 18 and 21 months of age. However at 60 months neonatal caffeine therapy was no longer assciated with a significantly improved rate of survival without disability in children with very low birth weights. This study at age 5 reports results of detailed assesment of motor function, cognition, behavior, general health, hearing and vision after the study paticipants had reached the age of 5.
In Summary the neonatal caffeine therapy in VLBW infants (Preterm) showed the benefits on the rate of survival without disability at 18 months were attenuated during child development. The rates of coognitve impaiment were lower at 5 years than at 18 months, suggesting cognitive delay during the second year of life may not be a lasting outcome after very preterm birth.
